New sites launched – the-local-jobs.com & TipTopCar.com

Posted in TipTopJob News and Updates

TipTopJob is part of a larger advertising network of websites called The TipTop Group. We have recently launched two new sites; TipTopCar and the-local-jobs.com.

Here is how we categorise our sites…..

Jobs: Generic
TipTopJob.com is the main site and is the centre of all the Job system. Candidates can search for Jobs anywhere in the world and in some countries use proximity search to filter down to Jobs within an area. There are 35 different Industry sectors to choose from to identify with your work skills. Clients can advertise on any of 85 different country sites thereby attracting Candidates from any Country in the world. You are already aware of this site.

Jobs: Industry based
theINDUSTRYjob.com allows Candidates & Clients to relate to a particular vertical market or Industry. The word ‘INDUSTRY’ is exchanged to one of 35 different Industry names – i.e. theITjob.com; theSALESjob.com; theHRjob.com; etc. The system is linked with TipTopJob.com and shares the same pool of Candidates. You will also already be aware of these sites.

Jobs: Local based
the-LOCAL-job.com is an advertising media that allows Users to filter down by selecting a Country; a Region; a County and a Town and the site will show Jobs within that vicinity. At present, Jobs are supplied by the TipTopJob database. This is one of our new sites that has recently launched and assists with traffic coming through to the jobs on the site in specific towns and locations.

Cars, Bikes & Vans
TipTopCar.com allows Sellers of Motor Vehicles to advertise and for Buyers to search for the vehicle of their choice. Buyers can be email alerted to made aware of vehicles coming available. This is the other new site that has recently launched. If you know anyone who owns a garage and wants to advertise their cars online, please ask them to get in touch.

For now, that is as much as we are going to tell you. There are more sites due to launch in the coming year as part of The TipTop Group so watch this space!

Unions

Posted in Survey Results

Are you part of a union at work? Do you think that this could help your chances of not being made redundant in these tough times?

We recently sanctioned a survey about unions; if people were part of a union, if not, would they want to be and if they thought it would help NOT being made redundant.

Interestingly, 82% said they were not part of a union which is a high proportion of nearly 3,000 people surveyed. 56% of these non-union reps said that they would not even want to join a union. But, finally, 68% of people felt that being part of a union would not help them to keep their jobs.

Maybe the benefit of being part of a union would be that they can help individuals to negotiate more favourable terms when they are being made redundant rather than it actually preventing individuals from being made redundant at all.

If you have anything interesting to say about unions. Are you part of union? Has it helped you to avoid redundancy? Or have you been made redundant even though you are part of it? Or, has a union helped you negotiate better terms of leaving? Whatever it is about the subject do leave a post online or email us your comments….

Should accents hinder your chances of a job

Posted in Survey Results

We have been running a survey on the site for the last few weeks about accents helping or hindering employment opportunities. The first few questions we asked included, “Would you consider hiding a heavy regional accent to improve your chances of securing a job?”, “Do you think having a strong regional accent is helpful in an interview situation?” and “Do you think bosses discriminate against people with strong regional accents?”.

Although 57% answered NO to the first question, 43% actually said YES which means nearly half of the respondents would consider hiding a heavy regional accent to improve their chances of securing a job. Interesting!

A similar response was found to the third question where nearly half of the respondents think that bosses would discriminate against people with strong regional accents. Maybe this is why a similar number of people may want to hide their accents because they ultimately think they will discriminated against!!!

Interestingly 68% of people do not think a strong regional accent is actually helpful in securing a job.

And, when we asked jobseekers about which accents they think are the most attractive to the employer most respondents answered “Home Counties” closely following by the “Scottish” accent and then the “Birmingham” accent.

Should accents really get in the way of your career opportunities?? Well obviously not but it seems to be something that people feel strongly about and a lot of jobseekers feel accents could end up being a deciding factor in whether they are accepted for a new job or not over the next person…….

Have you ever not been accepted because of your accent? Or, do you think that a recruiter loved your accent and told you that so took you on? Let us know. We would be interested to hear your stories.

Networking

Posted in Career Advice

One of the best ways to find a new job for a lot of people, especially in todays marketplace is to use your ever expanding network. The term “network” relates to not only your colleagues, friends and family but beyond this. Think about friends of friends of friends, people who you start chatting to on a night out, a random on the train/bus and people you may be connected to on one of the various social networking sites.

Sometimes just knowing someone that works in the company you want to get into helps as they can put in a “good” word for you. It normally by-passes the whole application stage and your CV will go through to the right person straight away and you are almost guaranteed an interview. They can sell you in without any recruitment company getting invloved.

A lot of people dont want to ask their friends and families for favours like this and if you are one of these people who thinks in this way, you MUST change your mind-set. Everyone else talks to people and uses their networks plus you will use your network for other things, like maybe finding out about the best hotels or restaurants to visit in a holiday resort that you are visiting, so why not use them to help you secure one of the most important things your life – your job!!!

Not only that but you can find out what it is REALLY like to work in a company by talking to the people you may know. If you are not sure, then you dont have to pursue.

Dont be shy – ask away!!!!

Current unemployment

Posted in Career Advice

So, the new unemployment figures were announced today at 2.1 million. Although this has gone up it is certainly as not as steep as what a lot of people were expecting.

Could things be turning? Are people becoming a little more positive and confident in the market? We hope so.

So, the point of this entry to the blog is to try to help you as a jobseeker to think about what you should be doing now to get yourself back into work.

It is a different marketplace to what we were experiencing a few years ago, even a year ago and jobseekers do not have the pick of the bunch anymore. In all honesty, you cant be fussy and if you are offered a job, whether it is a lower salary or something that does not challenge you as much as you want, and if you desperately need to start earning, you should consider accepting it. You may want to even consider doing some voluntary work or very low paid work to make yourself even more attractive for a longer term prospect.

Not only this, but as a jobseeker, you need to think about how you can make yourself even more attractive in such a competitive marketplace. Have you considered developing your skills further through additional training? Maybe you could just make yourself more attractive by being able to do something a little different, e.g. if you are in IT operations/helpdesk work you could learn some web design as well. If you increase the variety of your skills, you could be hired over the next person.

Maybe you may want to consider changing industry sectors and moving into an industry that is not suffering as badly as the one you are in. This could be worth investigating.

Have you considered your appearance in interviews? Well, maybe this should be something to consider. By making sure you are dressed well and presented in the best way before meeting your potential employer, you could be seen as being a better candidate. If you have piercings, consider removing them. If you have tattooes, consider hiding them. You may not think this matters, but every little thing could help in this very competitive, difficult candidate driven marketplace. It could be these little things that count towards you securing your next role.

Places to look for work?

Posted in Career Advice

If you are currently out of work and looking for a new job in these difficult times then you should be thinking about using multiple avenues to job hunting.

Today, there are many more places to find work rather than just the job centre and high street recruitment agencies.

Have you registered online? Job boards are becoming ever more popular as the first place to look for a job. If you have not looked online, then really that is your next place to look. There are many job boards out there with thousands of jobs on their sites to search through. It is an easy way to find something as you can apply directly online, upload your CV so recruiters can contact you and you can set up email alerts so you can sit back and let the jobs come to you. Easy as 1-2-3! No running around, speaking to loads of people and trying to sell yourself at this stage. All you need to do is become familiar with how the job boards you work and how to best utilise the services on offer.

Not only can you look online on the job boards, but you can also apply directly to clients that interest you. Then you have the many Careers Fairs and Careers Event designed to help jobseekers. You can also speak to Careers Advisors who can assist you in finding the right job.

There are also companies you can register with who will send your CV out to job boards and recruitment agencies. They can also help you tailor your CV accordingly. This could be useful if you need to touch up your CV before going to apply or if you are not quite sure what you want to do.

The best way to find a new job is really through your networks – that is your friends, family and colleagues. Have you thought about asking around to see if anyone knows of anything going at their office? It is a foot in the door and often can lead to a good recommendation from your friend, so get asking!!!!!

Redundancy

Posted in Career Advice
It has been a long time since we posted an entry into our blog, but we are back and want to help provide you with some useful tips on various career related items.

Because many people are being made redundant at the moment, then what better place to start than “coping with redundancy”.

If you have been in the unfortunate position of being made redundant then these are just a few things to bear in mind….

Negotiate your redundancy pay – you may be able to get more on leaving.

Stay positive. Even though this may be very very hard as it is a difficult time, you should remember that there “will” be another job out there suitable for you – you may just need to re-think what you do and what money to accept. You will not be out of work forever.

Try to get job searching straight away. The longer you are out the work, the more difficult it is to get back into it. Also, the more questions you will have to answer in job interviews. You may become less motivated to job hunt the longer you are out of work as well.

On the other hand, do not just say yes to the first job that comes along. You may want to think about whether the role is right for you before you take it. You want to be happy with what you are doing for about 9 hours of your day.

There are jobs out there and you can see that with the number of jobs on our site right now to search through.

Regional buzzword bingo

Posted in Survey Results

TipTopJob published a survey today that suggests that different buzzwords wind people up differently depending on where they work in the UK.

In Wales, workers have voted “touch base” the most annoying piece of management jargon; in Scotland, it is “at the end of the day”; while in London, “play it by ear” gets our goat and our vote.

Whether this a true reflection of the annoyance of certain terms or whether these words are used more frequently, and therefore, are more likely to be more annoying in these areas, I’m not sure. But here is the full run down of what annoys people most:

Wales

1. Touch base

2. Believe you and me

3. Play it by ear.

Scotland

1. At the end of the day

2. There is no I in team

3. Play it by ear

London and South East England

1. Play it by ear

2. There is no I in team

3. Touch base/ moving forward

South West England

1. Believe you and me

2. At the end of the day

3. There is no I in team.

The Midlands

1. There is no I in team

2. Moving forward

3. At the end of the day

North West England

1. There is no I in team

2. Moving forward

3. In terms of

North East England

1. Moving forward

2. Touch base

3. To be honest

What jargon do you find the most annoying at your office? Do they differ from those suggested above? Tell us here.

Job Board Technology

Posted in Online Recruitment

In the fast paced, technologically savvy environment we work in today, what is the best technology that job boards should be running on? A lot of online recruitment sites will still be running on an ASP platform but as websites become more advanced with the need to get ahead of competition offering new exciting features and functionality, platforms for job boards will change.

TipTopJob will be moving to a .NET platform sometime this year so they will be able to offer candidates a much more advanced job search facility and recruiters a user friendly and highly efficient CV search facility.

Earning an honest crust?

Posted in Survey Results

Sales workers are the most dishonest according to a recent survey which has discovered that when given the choice to bend the truth about work expenses, those who work in Sales will jump at the chance, compared to the much more honest accountants and construction workers.

TipTopJob.com surveyed 5 different sectors, reaching across recruitment, IT, accountancy, sales and construction. Individuals were asked a simple yes or no question as to whether they tell the honest truth about their expenses and an astonishing 66% of sales people admitted that they are partial to exaggerating the truth when the time comes to claim their money back.

Accountants are the most unlikely to stretch the truth about their expenses: a massive 71% objected to doing such a thing. Whilst Construction workers followed a similar example with a matching 70% honest answer.
