Career progression top reason for changing jobs...

In our latest research study, we found that the main reason for looking for a new job is "career progression".

Jobseekers look around in order to take the next step up the career ladder but staying within the same industry. Almost 60% responded to this option. In some instances, there becomes a limit and barrier to the progress that can be made within a company and so the only option is to move on elsewhere.

25% of jobseekers are after a new role of a similar level but just want to move away from their current company/organisation. Potentially due to staff or manager clashes, lack of training, money issues, location/commuting difficulties being some of the reasons.

15% however, were looking for a career change all together.

Skills in the workplace

We came across an article in the news today about the top skills that employers are looking for. Within the piece it states that the number one skill is verbal communication. Whether this is needed or not in the actual role, it is felt that this skill is the most important over any of other. Do you agree?

Second in the research is teamwork. Although teamwork is paramount when working alongside others, there are jobs that probably require other more important skills over teamwork, so it really does depend on the industry and job role.

Some of the other skills within the top 10 include; commercial awareness, analysis and investigation, initiative and self-motivation, drive, written communication, planning, organisation and time management. Although this list is not exhaustive, it does cover some of the most important skills needed for many roles. As already mentioned some skills may be more important for specific roles that are not highlighted here so although the above are thought to be the most important based on a number of surveys, it is not set in stone.

For example, an IT Software Developers' most important skills may be programming, logical thinking, structured thinking and attention to detail whereas a Sales Managers' most important skills may be verbal communication, teamwork, leadership and negotiation skills etc.

“Value to customers” comes on top when it comes to CSR

When looking for a new job, corporate social responsibility of an organisation may not even enter your mind and it may not be something a lot of companies have time to think about but when considering large corporate organisations it is somewhat quite significant.

In our most recent survey, we asked 1,000 respondents what they felt was the most important to them when assessing CSR within an organisation. We found that “value to customers” was the more important category within Corporate Social Responsibility in the employees/jobseekers eyes.

The top response was 39% who said “value to customers” was the most important. This was closely followed by “acting responsibly” where 25% responded. 16% felt “treating employees well” was important.

Only 3% responded with “partnering with suppliers”, this was the least important factor. Only 8% felt “Investing in communities” was important and 9% felt “respecting the environment” was important.

If you were looking for a new job and checking out what the organisation got involved with in terms of its corporate social responsibility, what would be the most important factor for you? Would you agree that “value to customers” is the most important factor? Do you think “partnering with suppliers” is the least most important factor?
