National Hug Your Boss Day Round Up

Last month we celebrated another successful National Hug Your Boss Day on Friday 13th September.

As usual we saw photos and videos of employees being spread across social media expressing their love for their bosses as well as their colleagues across the World. Most bosses show a reciprocal amount of love and enjoyment from the hugs, some cringe, some refuse. We have some cracking shots!

Thank you to everyone who shared their moments and joined in with the fun. On the serious side, we are still looking at assisting, encouraging, developing, growing and managing relationships within the workplace and especially those between colleagues and with managers or the other way around, with employees. It is so important to try to improve and nurture the environment that we work in to ensure there is excellent communication and productivity for everyone, increased motivation and morale across the workforce.

Next year, we have set the date for celebrations again which will be Friday 18th September 2020. Please stick it in the diary and be prepared to join in with us.

Photos from this year are now up on the website. We attempted to collate as many as we can.....

Mental health affects 30% due to workplace issues

Mental health has become a much talked about subject across the World right now so we have been investigating this delicate field within the workplace and if people felt that mental health had possibly been triggered by certain working situations. With many people working long hours, feeling stressed and struggling to maintain a healthy work life balance it would seem like there could be a link between the two.

The survey asked if people or their friends/colleagues/people they knew had suffered with mental health issues triggered by work related issues. Reassuringly, 70% said no but there were still 30% saying yes, showing us that some working environments may not be right for many. Although the response clearly shows more people stating no, which is great, there is still a large proportion (the 30%) that are suffering, most probably in silence, because of something related to work which could be avoided or addressed. On top of this, we must also account for those who do suffer with mental health issues but do not realise that it is their workplace or job causing it. An interesting statistic according to MIND, the mental health charity found that one in six people suffer from mental health in the workplace.

So, what can we as workers do to try to manage mental health or reduce the potential of it hitting us altogether? Here are some things to think about....

- Take regular breaks and go for a walk to get fresh air
- Create fun social situations with the people you work with, like lunches, drinks, bowling etc
- Listen to music to help you to unwind, de-stress
- Eat healthily and avoid excess alcohol
- Manage the work life balance by avoiding doing too many hours
- Build a to-do list that you can use to make sure you do not become overwhelmed and over-loaded
- Do not leave any problems or uncertainties to brew and always address them with your bosses or colleagues

The MIND website, has some great ideas that we would recommend reading if this is something affecting you. Click here to have a look.

How many hierarchies do you have to report through?

32% of employees exist in a company with 4 or more hierarchies of reporting. Latest research into the number of hierarchies within businesses also found that 25% have 3, 23% have 2 and 20% have 1.

The graph below illustrates the results of the survey highlighting the differences between the number of bosses and the number of hierarchies. We can clearly see that there are more employees with just the 1 boss that they report into and there are more companies using 4 or more levels of hierarchy.

12% report to 4 or more bosses

With National Hug Your Boss Day fast approaching, we are turning around our survey questions rapidly to gather lots of interesting data to report. Do help us by casting your votes on the homepage of the website.

Last week, we asked how many bosses you report into. Surprisingly, we found that 12% report into 4 or more bosses.

However, more obviously, there were 54% of people who only report into the 1 boss, making it a little easier for them.

26% report into 2 bosses and 8%, 3.

Having many tiers a hierarchy is fairly common practice but the number of bosses you directly report to is different and can clearly vary from company to company.

So, all of you out there that report into more than the 1 boss, would you prefer to have just 1 boss to report to or do you find multiple reporting OK?! Do tell us here.....

Did anyone see "National Hug Your Boss Day" ?

Did anyone see "National Hug Your Boss Day" in the news on the 23rd August? Here at TipTopJob, we were all to happy to have a hug with our bosses and colleagues. We created the day back in 2008 to promote workplace relationships.

On a couple of the surveys we had run prior to the 2013 National Hug Your Boss Day we found that most people backed up our theory. 86% of respondents said that if they were happy with their boss that they are more productive. Second to this, top of the list of options to the question "What makes you more productive at work?" was "Good Working Relationships".

Another interesting survey result found that 55% of women would prefer to hug another woman. When asking men the same question, 62% would prefer to hug a woman.

Hug of the month went to Choice FM, whose photo you can see on the homepage of the website. CBS 42's Kate Muse and Kaitlin McCullet celebrated the day by hugging their news Director, Bill Payer.

You can check out more hugs sent in this year in the Gallery on the website:

And more interaction on our Facebook page:

We would love to hear of any more hugs we missed so do let us know if they are not currently shown and we hoped you all enjoyed the day this year. We look forward to celebrating again next year :)

46% Think It Is NEVER Acceptable To Hug Your Boss

With National Hug Your Boss Day fast approaching, it has been reported this year that 46% think it is NEVER acceptable to hug their boss.

A recent study conducted by TipTopJob went on to find that only 5% would hug their boss when their boss praised them, 15% would hug their boss on “hello” or “goodbye” but 19% would when they got a promotion.

National Hug Your Boss Day is being held on Friday 23rd August 2013. The day was launched back in 2008 to promote workplace relationships and highlight the importance of getting along with your boss/manager.

A secondary survey asked individuals if they were a “pro” or “anti” hugger. Corinne Hutchinson, comments, “A massive 73% said they were a “pro” hugger. So, given this huge figure, we are asking people to get hugging, get snapping and submit their photos online on our Facebook page. There is a competition running for the best hug this year.”

National Hug Your Boss Day was created by TipTopJob.com, an online Job Board with over 400,000 live jobs across the world. Please contact us for more information coz@tiptopjob.com.
