CV / Resume done. What next?

Our latest research tells us that recruitment agencies do not get a look in compared to job boards and direct applications to specific jobs and organisations.

After a month of asking jobseekers what they do once they are happy with their CV / Resume, we found that 45% choose to upload it to a job board and make online applications via their systems. 39% apply directly to company opportunities and lagging way behind is the option to use a Recruitment Agency with only 12% taking that route.

There will always be a market and desire to use Recruitment Agencies especially within certain specialist industry sectors so it really does come down to what kind of jobs are being applied for. Many jobs can be found on job boards so it is quick and easy to make job applications online in this way where the CV/Resume can be saved within a users account. On the flip side of this though, some companies will never publish their vacancies on job boards or even enrol an agent, so direct applications to companies would be the chosen avenue.

Social media catching up chocolate as the thing people give up for lent

Interesting research has found that social media and chocolate are almost par and par when it comes to the thing that people give up for lent. Chocolate and sweets are still the most common thing to give up (18%) followed by social media (14%). 

When it comes to lent, people give up the thing they feel they are most addicted to, a habit they want to kick or the thing that they feel is not good for them. It could be anything, not just something you eat or drink but also something you do. It is interesting now in 2018, that people are choosing to give up social media - something that has sadly taken over most peoples work and social lives. We do hope that individuals start to realise the negative effect social media has on them and start to retain some self-control over their daily usage.

There were plenty of other options on our list when it came to what people give up at lent. Here are some of the other results....
Caffeine - 6%
Alcohol - 5%
Smoking - 5%
Meat - 3% 
Crisps - 2% 

On the other hand, 47% of our respondents to this research said that they are not giving up anything !

How to use Facebook to help you in your job search

Facebook is the largest social network that allows individuals to connect with friends and acquaintances and re-connect with people from the past. As networking is the best tool for finding a new job, Facebook can be very effective in helping you to open new doors.

Tell your friends that you are looking for a new job. It is important that everyone knows your situation otherwise they are non-the-wiser. If your friends know you are looking then they are likely to let you know about any relevant roles that come up of interest to you. Keep updating your status about things relating to your job hunt so people do not forget your situation e.g. “interview went well this morning”.

Instead of just updating your status, use “Notes” as these tend to stay on people screens for longer.

Make sure your Facebook profile is private. Under your Account, Privacy Settings you can choose “Friends Only” so that potential employers who search for your name cannot see your details, photos or updates.

Facebook’s list feature means you can create lists of people in your network and customise the privacy settings so professional friends can only see what you want them to see. This means you do not jeopardise your chances of getting a new job if you are connected to a potential employer and you do not want them seeing certain things.

Facebook may be more for fun but do not over-look how effective it can be when looking for a new job. Because the people in your Facebook network are generally people you know better than the other networks, you are more likely to be recommended jobs by others if they know you are looking. Do not be afraid to embrace Facebook in your search for a new job.

66% say they carefully select social media posts

Our latest findings reveal that 66% of employees carefully select what they post onto their social media profiles as they fear it will negatively affect their chances at work. 48% of this figure feel that it therefore restricts their use of social media.

21% of the employees say it is does not stop them and it does not worry them at all. 

Social media is being used everywhere, not just for personal uses but business as well so it is hard to draw a line for some employees if they are using it as part of their job. Surely, someone with access to Facebook who is posting company updates, will sneak the odd peak at their personal profile? No? Should there be some leeway on personal use anyway in an office or does giving an inch turn into a mile?

Well it varies depending on the industry and job role really. Working in the marketing and media industry would require regular use of social media across all platforms. But when working in recruitment there would be constant use of Linkedin required but not so much on Facebook and Twitter. At the end of the day, it is down to the company and what their rules and regulations are. Our advice would be to not take advantage of your situation or you may have to deal with more serious consequences.

Linkedin helps jobseekers secure jobs

Have you ever wondered which social media platform was the best for sourcing a new job?

Well, in our latest survey, we asked over 537 people in one week which of the social media platforms they HAD managed to get a job via. 

Can you guess which site was the winner? Yes, you got it. Linkedin hands down won the poll. Almost half of the respondents said they had got a new job via the use of Linkedin. Linkedin IS the more professional network and constantly displays new vacancies that are relevant to you. With the networking opportunities available through this platform, it is no doubt the place to start looking when using social media.

Finalists for two awards

We are pleased to announce that we have been shortlisted as a finalist for two categories in the forthcoming Onrec Awards. TipTopJob is a finalist in the best use of social media and theExMILITARYjob.com is a finalist in the best niche job boards.

Onrecs Awards are now in their 11th year and are firmly marked in the calendar as the industry’s must attend event. The winners will be announced at a Gala Dinner in London on the 19th March.

TipTopJob has been using social media to gain active and passive jobseekers which has been building well. It has gained more than a 20,000 visitor reach across social media and in July, TipTopJob was ranked as #7 for Twitter Follower Growth.

theExMILITARYjob launched only in October 2014 and has already set up partnerships with several charities including Mission Motorsport and UK Homes 4 Heroes. The site has gained a decent following and is building through clients posting a range of different jobs onto the site. The site is taking additional steps to help the ex-forces back into civilian life and help them to find a new career including assisting with CV writing and recruiting ex-forces into theExMILITARYjob and TipTopJob organisations themselves.
