Career progression top reason for changing jobs...

In our latest research study, we found that the main reason for looking for a new job is "career progression".

Jobseekers look around in order to take the next step up the career ladder but staying within the same industry. Almost 60% responded to this option. In some instances, there becomes a limit and barrier to the progress that can be made within a company and so the only option is to move on elsewhere.

25% of jobseekers are after a new role of a similar level but just want to move away from their current company/organisation. Potentially due to staff or manager clashes, lack of training, money issues, location/commuting difficulties being some of the reasons.

15% however, were looking for a career change all together.

If you are looking for a new job, head over to our jobsite TipTopJob.com where you can search through over 400,000 active jobs in 61 industry sectors. 44% only ever done their CV the once

Latest research discovers that 44% of jobseekers have only ever put their CV together, just the once. Does this tell us that many jobseekers only compile their CV, apply for the one job and then are lucky enough to be offered it? Wouldn't that make job hunting easy!

Further to this, 34% have created somewhere between 2 and 5 CV's when applying for a job. This relates to the CV being varied according to the similar but different roles being applied for at the same time.

13% have created more than 10 CV's - WOW! And 9% have put together between 5 and 10 CV's.

So, how many have you done? Have you found that you are re-creating many CV's so you only ever send one CV to one company? This is how we advise jobseekers to go about their job applications to ensure they are really targeting their applications according to the job and role. So if this is YOU, well done and keep it up!

If you require some advice on putting together a new CV, head over to our Career Centre on the website. It has plenty of great articles to help with many topics surrounding CV writing.

Results are as follows:
- Only once = 44.4%
- twice = 14.5%
- 3-5 times = 19.5%
- 5-7 times = 6.4%
- 7-10 times = 2.4%
- >10 times = 12.9%

76% want more flexible working but are they allowed?

In a recent study, it was revealed that 76% of workers would prefer to have a more flexible approach to their working location.

We asked over 1000 employees about whether they would want to work from home and if so, how much time would they settle for. We found....

- 25% are happy working at the office
- 8% would like to work one day per week at home
- 26% would like to work 2 to 3 days per week at home
- 41% would like to work more than 3 days per week at home

Although, there is a decent percentage of employees who are happy to remain working in an office environment, a much larger number of people are not. Why is this? Why are employers not speaking to their employees and respecting their wishes?

In some instances, really it comes down to the industry and job in which these employees are working within. How can an IT support worker who deals with on-site issues throughout a day possibly work from home. On the other hand though, a telesales person could quite happily do their job from home without the need for social interaction with colleagues. Also, being around other people throughout the day is much more sociable and allows for quicker and more comprehensive communication with colleagues.

How does working at home affect an individuals productivity? It is hard to give a blanket response to this question as when we have spoken to people in the past, some are massively self-motivated, able to get their job done without any distraction at home but others find any reason not to knuckle down. Employers are frightened at not being able to monitor daily tasks sometimes as not everyone works as hard when left to their own devices.

What are your thoughts and views on this subject? At the end of the day, should it be based on a case by case basis depending on the individuals personality, work ethic, self-motivation and more? We think so!

Most romantic careers around….

With Valentines approaching, we have decided to research the most romantic careers around. Google describes romance as “a feeling of excitement and mystery associated with love” so we thought about those careers that encompass these feelings.

Here are just some of the careers that we came up with….

Novelist
A novelist is someone who absorbs themselves in writing. Someone writing about love, relationships, marriage etc would definitely fall into the love zone!

Wedding planner
The most exciting time for relationships can be planning their big day so to be sharing this excitement of love can be quite romantic itself.

Chef/Waiter
Not all chefs and waiters would experience the romantic side that some do. We are considering those waiting in small intimate restaurants where couples are sharing a romantic meal and chefs would involve themselves in creating special romantic recipes with delicious smells and vibrant colours. Just thinking about this experience gets us all gooey and warm.

Marriage Counsellor
Being involved in working through problems may bring certain stress and upset, but when you witness improvements, love, emotions, this job can certainly shed some romance.

Dating website worker
Whatever the exact role, being part of bringing individuals together to meet for the first time is extremely romantic – you cannot argue with that!

Poet/Song writer/Lyricist
Expressing true feelings and romantic gestures encourages physical attraction and is sure to get sparks flying. Words can make people really fall in love!

Wedding photographer
Capturing special moments throughout a couples wedding day can create huge feelings of excitement and satisfaction around love for others.

Sommelier
Along with food, wine can be part of a romantic atmosphere, whether in the comfort of your own home or out for drinks or dinner. Being able to serve loved up couples their favourite drinks would also fall under one of our most romantic careers.

What creates love, romance and excitement around these feelings is different for everyone. These are the jobs we consider to bring a smile to our faces. Have we missed any other romantic careers that would make your heart jump? We would love to know. Please let us know here…..

Questions to ask at the end of an interview

After finding out in a recent survey conducted by TipTopJob that most people worry about what questions they will ask at the end of the interview, we thought it would be useful to put together some questions to think about choosing to use.

Asking good quality questions after being interviewed for a new role can highlight your interest in the company and role, show your motivation, ambition and intelligence.

You must not forget that an interview is a two way street and it is just as much about you deciding whether the job is right for you as it is the company working out if you are right for them.

So with this in mind, what sort of questions could you ask?? Here are some ideas that you can take with you…..

What are the biggest challenges of the job?
This will help you decide if you are up for the challenges and how far you are willing to push yourself should you take on the role. It can also help you to prepare for any further interviews you may be invited to as well.

How many other people are you interviewing?
This will help you to gauge what competition you are up against and possibly how long you will need to wait to hear from the hiring manager about how you have done.

When are you looking to recruit?
This gives you a stronger idea on timescales and how long you will need to wait to hear if you have another interview or if you have got the job. It shows you are keen and want to know when the position can potentially be yours!

Why is the job available?
This can help you to understand why someone may have left from the role or why the role has been created. The answer to this question can help you determine what to expect from the job and if it is suitable for you.

Are you confident that I am suitable for the role?
This puts the interviewer on the spot and shows your confidence. It can help you to gauge how well you have performed and if you are in for a good chance. It could be the opportunity, if negative, to find out what you have not done right and how you can work on improving certain areas before any other interviews.

What do you love and hate about working for this company?
This can give you a great idea of the positive and negative factors relating to the company and what someone else likes/dislikes. Hearing from someone who actually works at the company is one hundred times better than reading a company website or brochure. You will get a much better feeling about the truth.

What are the most and least enjoyable parts to this role?
By asking the positive and negative you may get a more rounded answer. Although it is the opinion of the interviewer, this will still help you to understand the good and bad aspects and whether this is something you agree with and want to take on.

What training do you offer?
This shows you are interested in increasing your own skills which is something a company will be keen to see.

Is there scope for promotion?
Again this shows you want to develop yourself and that you are keen. It is another classic question to ask!

So, now you have some ideas, maybe think about those that may be most suitable to ask for your interview coming up. Good Luck!

Interview worries

What do you worry about the most when preparing for a job interview?

Our latest survey found that 36% of people worry most about the questions they have for the interviewer at the end of interview. Being able to hold decent eye contact came out as the least worrying aspect. The other options included getting to the interview on time, what to wear, knowledge of the company and knowledge of the role.

The results were as follows:

Have we missed out something that you worry about when you are due to go for an interview?
