CV / Resume done. What next?

Our latest research tells us that recruitment agencies do not get a look in compared to job boards and direct applications to specific jobs and organisations.

After a month of asking jobseekers what they do once they are happy with their CV / Resume, we found that 45% choose to upload it to a job board and make online applications via their systems. 39% apply directly to company opportunities and lagging way behind is the option to use a Recruitment Agency with only 12% taking that route.

There will always be a market and desire to use Recruitment Agencies especially within certain specialist industry sectors so it really does come down to what kind of jobs are being applied for. Many jobs can be found on job boards so it is quick and easy to make job applications online in this way where the CV/Resume can be saved within a users account. On the flip side of this though, some companies will never publish their vacancies on job boards or even enrol an agent, so direct applications to companies would be the chosen avenue.

New Career Article Live - How To Best Use Job Boards

It is time to find a job, but where do you start? Today, there is a wealth of information available on the Internet and it can be mind-blowing. Job boards have become a very popular tool to finding a job but with many different types, functionalities, tools, features, specialisms and locations it can be overwhelming. Job boards seem easy to use but blindly registering on them all and madly uploading your CV across the board is not going to land your dream job! So, how do you best utilise a job board? We are here to help unravel it all!

Difference between aggregators, job boards and recruitment agencies
You will find aggregators, generic job boards, niche job boards, recruitment agencies and direct employer sites. Aggregators compile all jobs (well, almost all depending on who is paying to be listed) from across as many websites as they can. You do not register on the aggregator, you just simply find a job and click through to the site to then make your application. Job boards advertise jobs from recruitment agencies AND direct clients depending on the job board in question. You can register for free, upload CVs, upload cover letters, set up Job Alerts and search through all the jobs and apply online. With recruitment agencies, you can register but they also help you by finding and matching you to relevant jobs and the bonus is you are able to speak directly to them.

Use as a research tool
Job boards are an amazing research tool. Whether you know the direction of your next steps or not, the jobs, career advice available to you on most job boards is phenomenal. You can get a decent understanding of what kinds of jobs are out there, what skills etc are required, what companies are advertising. It is a quick and easy way to gather a lot of important information.

66% say they carefully select social media posts

Our latest findings reveal that 66% of employees carefully select what they post onto their social media profiles as they fear it will negatively affect their chances at work. 48% of this figure feel that it therefore restricts their use of social media.

21% of the employees say it is does not stop them and it does not worry them at all.

Social media is being used everywhere, not just for personal uses but business as well so it is hard to draw a line for some employees if they are using it as part of their job. Surely, someone with access to Facebook who is posting company updates, will sneak the odd peak at their personal profile? No? Should there be some leeway on personal use anyway in an office or does giving an inch turn into a mile?

Well it varies depending on the industry and job role really. Working in the marketing and media industry would require regular use of social media across all platforms. But when working in recruitment there would be constant use of Linkedin required but not so much on Facebook and Twitter. At the end of the day, it is down to the company and what their rules and regulations are. Our advice would be to not take advantage of your situation or you may have to deal with more serious consequences.

What are your thoughts on social media in the workplace? Should it be allowed or is it a distraction?

Free International Job Advertising in 84 Countries

To focus our efforts in marketing across the UK, we have now switched ALL International job advertising for the rest of the 84 Country domains that we cover to FREE.

This allows all Recruitment Agencies and Direct Clients the opportunity to post anything from a single job to unlimited jobs.

A Recruiter simply needs to register as normal on the site and choose their local Country domain e.g. de.TipTopJob.com for Germany. This will automatically allow the Recruiter to then proceed to post jobs. If using a job posting board, the login details need to be passed onto the board and posting can continue as normal. For multiple uploads via CSV or XML, Recruiters will need to get in touch with TipTopJob. Otherwise, everything can be done online.

Our full list of Country domains can be found on the website here.

The only Country that is not allowing FREE job advertising is the UK. However, new advertisers within the UK, can request a FREE TRIAL for unlimited job advertising before purchasing any packages.

For any questions, please do get in touch with us on +44(0)1628 207350 or email sales@TipTopJob.com.

"All is going well. We have made 4 placements so far, with 6 more potential placements in the pipeline. Our clients tend to have a fast turnover rate of staff, though, so it's largely an ongoing process."

Another happy customer. Smiles all around!

How is a job board different to a recruitment agency?

We get a lot of calls and emails from jobseekers asking us to call them back, wanting to follow up on applications, needing more information about a job etc etc so we wanted to clear up a few key factors that make "us", the job board, different to a recruitment agency....

- First off, a job board is online. It collates jobs in a list which are registered by the recruitment agencies and direct clients. The job board allows a jobseeker to apply to these jobs ONLINE only.

- Job boards do not discuss the details of the job with the jobseeker and do not hold any further information regarding the jobs, other than what is seen on the site. They do not match a jobseeker to a job like a recruitment agency would.

- Job boards allow a jobseeker to register an account online for free and hold multiple CV's and Cover Letter's in their jobseeker accounts so these can be attached to roles when applying to them.

- You tend to see thousands of jobs being advertised on job boards rather than a smaller number held by a recruitment agency.

- Job boards will normally receive a fee from the recruitment agency or direct client for posting their vacancies on the sites.

Hopefully these points help to clear up the main difference between the two. So, if you are looking for a job, remember, you can apply for any job via a job board online. To follow up your application, you can contact the recruitment agency or direct client who are advertising the job, not the job board. Once the application has been made, it is with the advertiser of the job and has nothing more to do with the job board.

If you have any further questions about this, please do not hesitate to ask or comment below or get in touch on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or Linkedin.

Job boards first choice when looking for a new job...

Our most recent survey of around 1000 people over the last 2 weeks asked “When looking for a new job, where is the first place you would look?” The options we provided were; job board, recruitment agency, social network, friend network, direct, newspaper or jobcentre.

Most people clicked “job board” as the first place they would visit when looking for a new job, in fact 36%. “Recruitment agency” came in as the second most popular place to look with 24% of the responses. 13% would use their “social network”, 10% would visit their “jobcentre”, 8% would go “direct” to the employer, 7% read the “newspaper” and 3% said they would use their “friend network”.

We were surprised with the results as with so many more people using social networks today and with their increasing usage, we thought they would take more of the votes than a mere 13%. Recruitment agencies were two times more popular as a first choice and job boards almost three times more popular.

Where would you visit first? If it is a job board, then which job board is your number one?
