62% remain passive jobseekers once recruited

Interesting stats show that 62% of newly recruited staff, remain registered with job boards with their situation the same.

Research from TipTopJob, finds that 21% remove themselves from online recruitment sites altogether once they have started a new job and 17% remain registered but change their availability.

What does this show us? Are people concerned about having made the right decision about their move so are therefore keeping their options open? Should newly recruited staff remove themselves from job boards to really show their commitment to the new organisation?

Job boards would usually consist of jobseekers who are actively looking rather than passively. It is however up to individuals as to what they decide to do with their registrations and a lot of people like to always have their eyes out for alternative options. It will also depend on the industry and role type/level. If you imagine contractors, they are constantly changing roles and always need to be out there looking for their next opportunity and this is markedly different to Managing Directors who may only be changing roles every 10 to 15 years.

How to Pass Gartner CEB's SHL Numerical Tests

What is a Numerical Reasoning Test?
Numerical reasoning tests evaluate a candidate’s ability to manipulate numbers and analyse numerical data. Numerical reasoning tests consist of both word problems and graph/table questions.

How Long Are CEB's SHL Numerical Tests?
There is no one answer to this question. The length of a Gartner CEB's SHL numerical test varies based on employer. It can contain anywhere from 10 to 50 questions.
Is the Gartner CEB SHL Numerical Reasoning Test a Timed or Untimed Test?

Gartner CEB's SHL numerical test is a TIMED test! This is extremely important to know before taking the exam. The time clock often adds to the difficulty of the exam. But, don’t worry. You often are not expected to complete all the questions within the time limit.

Are All Garner CEB’s SHL Numerical Reasoning Tests the Same?
No! The CEB numerical reasoning test you will face will be tailored to the level of job you are applying for. This means if you are applying for a managerial position, you will take a different numerical reasoning test than that taken by a graduate. Here are some practice Gartner CEB SHL numerical reasoning tests based on level:
Senior management
Graduate/management
Entry level

How Is the Gartner CEB’s SHL Numerical Reasoning Test Scored?
CEB's SHL numerical reasoning test is a multiple-choice test. Your score is based on the number of correct answers you receive. This means it is better to guess on questions than to leave them blank.

What Is an SHL Pass Score?
The SHL pass score, which can also be called a cut score or pass mark, is the score a candidate must obtain to continue on to the other stages of the assessment. Each employer can choose if they would like to use a pass score as well as determine what they would like it to be. It is important to note that pass scores are used differently on CEB’s SHL verify tests and on those SHL CEB tests given at an assessment centre. SHL verify tests are a shorter version of the exam given to candidates online before the assessment centre. The verify test is used as a tool for recruiters to sift out the best candidates—those who should move on to the assessment centre. Thus, most of these tests have a pass score. The pass scores vary based on the employer and job type.

How Can I Prepare for Gartner CEB’s SHL Numerical Test?
First and foremost, CEB’s SHL encourages candidates to practise in advance! This means you should not just wing it on exam day. Before you sit the exam, make sure you understand basic mathematical operations. Brush up on your calculator skills; using the calculator efficiently can save you valuable time on your test. Practise estimating numbers when solving the questions. This can be a helpful shortcut. 67% know their company history - is this really that important?

Do you think it is important to know the background of your company? Do you even care? Or are you one of the 67% of people who DO know the history!

When applying for a new job and you are invited to an interview, it is hugely important to research the company, its owners, history, growth, changes, staff, its industry and anything else you can find out. An interviewer could well ask you questions surrounding the topic so it is good to have the knowledge for this reason but also because if you are applying for a new job there, you probably should have the desire to know what kind of company you could potentially be employed by.

Researching this kind of information helps to give you an insight into the culture, values, ethos, mindset, vision etc so can be useful in deciding whether it is the kind of company that would suit you!

33% of employees DO NOT KNOW their company background but what exactly does this mean? Does it mean they are bad at their job? Not necessarily. Maybe the culture, staff, values etc do not matter to them and they can perform their job without having to know anything more about the organisation itself.

Knowing the history of the company is definitely more important to certain industry sectors and employment levels, such as, Managing Directors, Project Managers, Account Directors and such like.

We would love to hear your thoughts on this topic. What job do you do and do you know your company's history? Comment below.....

CV / Resume Writing Companies

Over the last month we have been investigating the likelihood of jobseekers using CV and Resume Writing Companies to review and re-write their CV's/Resumes.

We first looked into how likely people were to using them. It was a close call with just 10% difference between people saying "never" and others saying "definitely". In fact there was a small difference between Never, Maybe and Definitely looking at the illustration between the options below.

28% said they would never use a professional CV / Resume Writing company, 32% said maybe and 40%, definitely. We are safe to say that there is a market for such companies to help those get their CV / Resume's up to scratch.

Following on from this analysis, we looked into why people would decide to use such professionals. 44% clearly felt that they would do a better job than them - whether this is true or not is another story. This could simply be down to a lack of the individuals confidence rather than their actual ability. 38% just did not know where to begin when reviewing and re-writing their CV/Resume so needed some direction. Finally, 18% did not have the time to re-do their CV/Resume and so would choose to use the professionals. With people being so busy and rushed today and longer hours being worked, this reason is definitely a deciding factor for many.

So once you have made the decision to use an external professional, how do you decide which company to use? It is always a good idea to shop around and see which company is suitable for you and works within your industry and location. It is also a good idea to go on recommendations and potential partnerships of businesses who recommend their services. Here at TipTopJob, we currently recommend Get Interviews which offers services within the UK, the USA and Worldwide. They offer a FREE CV / Resume review in the first place before purchasing any of their services. You can read a little more about CVGetInterviews here and GetInterviews here.

Skills in the workplace

We came across an article in the news today about the top skills that employers are looking for. Within the piece it states that the number one skill is verbal communication. Whether this is needed or not in the actual role, it is felt that this skill is the most important over any of other. Do you agree?

Second in the research is teamwork. Although teamwork is paramount when working alongside others, there are jobs that probably require other more important skills over teamwork, so it really does depend on the industry and job role.

Some of the other skills within the top 10 include; commercial awareness, analysis and investigation, initiative and self-motivation, drive, written communication, planning, organisation and time management. Although this list is not exhaustive, it does cover some of the most important skills needed for many roles. As already mentioned some skills may be more important for specific roles that are not highlighted here so although the above are thought to be the most important based on a number of surveys, it is not set in stone.

For example, an IT Software Developers' most important skills may be programming, logical thinking, structured thinking and attention to detail whereas a Sales Managers' most important skills may be verbal communication, teamwork, leadership and negotiation skills etc.
