6 Top Tips on how to use TipTopJob to search for a new job

When you are searching for a new job on TipTopJob, there are several things to bear in mind. Here are 6 Top Tips to help you use the site in the best way to find the perfect role for you. 

1. Register with TipTopJob as a jobseeker first. This will allow you to save jobs to your basket for a later date and easily attach the CV from your account when applying. 

2. Always choose "all" of the relevant industries that the role you are interested in could fall into. If you are looking for a Marketing Manager job for a large Supermarket chain, you must select the "Advertising, Marketing & PR", "Management" and "Retail & Wholesale" industries. You do not want to miss out on any opportunity that may be on the site in an industry you have not looked in!

3. Boolean search is always the best and can result in more accurate results. Take the advice on the Job Search Tips link on the search page on how to use it in the best way. 

4. If you are interested in working in more than 1 Country, start by searching in 1 Country and then move onto the next in a new search. You cannot search for jobs in multiple Countries.

5. If you are not able to find something that you want to apply for, make sure that you register an "Email Alert" which specifies the criteria of the role you want. This will allow the TipTopJob system to send you an email AS SOON AS a new job that is registered matches your criteria. You can then be the first to apply. You can register multiple "Email Alerts" so if you are interested in several types of jobs, register one for each.

6. Make sure that you attach your most up to date CV/Resume and one that is relevant to the job you are applying. You can save multiple CV/Resumes in your account so that you can tailor them accordingly.

Bring your baby to work program!!!

We have just discovered an initiative launched recently allowing new parents to bring their baby to work in a company in New Hampshire, USA. It allows parents to bring their child into work until they reach either 6 months or crawling stage and they are given a dedicated work space to remain comfortable.

The company that has started this program believes it will increase employee engagement, reduce turnover and reduce new parents leaving.

So, we are asking you what you think about this set up? Is it something you would consider as a new parent? Do you think you could fully concentrate on your job? Do you think the baby will benefit or suffer from being confined in an office?

Facts and Stats by National Hug Your Boss Day

Since the beginning of the year we have been collating survey results around workplace relationships to help with research behind National Hug Your Boss Day. We have been able to gather some fantastic and interesting findings.

For example, we can tell you that...................

- 16% want to laugh at their boss when they are told off
- A third of employees think their bosses top weakness is being impatient
- Most employees are happy if their employer is happy
- 96% would NOT kiss their boss
- 85% would NOT date their boss
- People working in the Advertising, Marketing and Media industries are more likely to socialise with their boss.
- Employees in the Accountancy, Finance and Legal industries are least likely to socialise with their boss
- 47% rate their relationships with co-workers as excellent
- No employees thought their co-worker relationships were poor
- 72% of us feel we are "hard" workers
- Most employees feel "courtesy and respect" are most important bosses quality
- A third of employees would swap their boss for President Obama
- Only 1% would want to swap boss for Piers Morgan
- Three quarters of employees have shouted at their boss in anger
- Most of us want a "calm" boss
- 2/3 of Americans LOVE their boss in comparison so almost 100% of those in China

SO WHAT IS NATIONAL HUG YOUR BOSS DAY?
National Hug Your Boss Day was created by TipTopJob.com back in 2008. The idea behind launching the day was to promote healthy workplace relationships. We believe that if you are happy to hug your boss then you are more than likely enjoying your job and this in turn may lead to better morale/motivation at work and therefore productivity. We are not saying this is always going to be the case but it is the logic behind the fun!!

We figure that because you spend most of your waking day with those at work, why not make it a more enjoyable experience by getting along with everyone and trying to develop the relationships you have?

79% have never shouted at their boss

You usually hear about the boss shouting at their employees but have you ever thought about an employee who shouts at their boss?

Our latest survey results reveal that 79% have NEVER shouted at their boss, which is a promising figure showing most of our users do respect their boss or have never had the need to express any negative emotions towards their leader.

Although the majority sit in this bracket, we do still have 21% who HAVE shouted at their boss in anger at some point in their career. Although we have not dug down into why, we can assume that it may have happened for a number of reasons.

Did the boss do something to provoke the attack and did the boss deserve it? Maybe the boss has shouted first? But even so, should the employee then shout back? How could this make the employee then feel after the action? Do they resign and leave or apologise and pretend it never happened? 

Whatever the reason behind shouting, it is not the best course of action, even if it is a reaction to a poorly behaved boss. Our advice is that if a boss has acted in this way to you, then remain calm and approach your boss with a professional attitude. Take some time before you speak to them to gather yourself and calm down if you need to. You do not want to make other employees uncomfortable and you certainly do not want to ruin your chances of a decent reference in the future.

National Hug Your Boss Day

National Hug Your Boss Day is fast approaching and due to be celebrated on Friday 9th September. Will you get involved this year? We hope so!

The philosophy behind National Hug Your Boss Day is to promote healthy working relationships with not only your boss but also your colleagues. We figure that if you are working alongside your boss and colleagues for on average 8 hours every week day, then you may as well enjoy spending that time with them.

We have been collating interesting facts and stats over the years and we will be releasing some more for 2016 before we celebrate on Friday 9th. Help us to build some interesting data by answering the survey questions on the homepage of TipTopJob which are currently changing regularly.

Corporate Jargon Explained

You are sitting with your friends having a catch up when they start talking in riddles and using abbreviations or random words you have never heard before! Corporate jargon otherwise known as corporate lingo, workplace jargon, business speak to name a few is often commonplace amongst large corporate companies and especially those originating in the USA. For some, it can be frustrating to be lost amongst such language so we have collated some common terms and provided you with an explanation for each. There are many references to such jargon which include using abbreviations, nouns, verbs and adjectives. Here they are……….

Abbreviations

COB – close of business
CSW – completed staff work
EOD – end of day
FTE – full-time equivalent
FY – fiscal year
HIBBIS – heads in beds, butts in seats
KPI – key performance indicators
NDA – non-disclosure agreement
PCP – previous corresponding period
POS – point of sale
PQQ - pre qualification questionnaire
RFP - Request for Proposal
RFQ - Request for quote
RIF – reduction in force
SBU – strategic business unit
SME – subject matter expert
TCO – total cost of ownership
TTT - this time tomorrow
WC – week commencing
WE – week ending

Nouns

Blue sky thinking: Idealistic or visionary ideas
Cascade: Array of possible actions to take in response to a problem: protocol

Flavor of the month: the current popular activity/person as directed by the company/client/management

Verbs

Baked In: Same as "included," in principle. Something which has been "baked in" is implied to be impossible to remove
Boil the Ocean: An effort or task which is perceived by the speaker to be impossible or impractical
Build Capacity: Take actions which produce no useful output immediately, but increase the amount of useful work which can be done in the future
Cover all directions of the compass: Try to make things acceptable for all stakeholders
