Regional buzzword bingo

Posted in Survey Results

TipTopJob published a survey today that suggests that different buzzwords wind people up differently depending on where they work in the UK.

In Wales, workers have voted “touch base” the most annoying piece of management jargon; in Scotland, it is “at the end of the day”; while in London, “play it by ear” gets our goat and our vote.

Whether this a true reflection of the annoyance of certain terms or whether these words are used more frequently, and therefore, are more likely to be more annoying in these areas, I’m not sure. But here is the full run down of what annoys people most:

Wales

1. Touch base

2. Believe you and me

3. Play it by ear.

Scotland

1. At the end of the day

2. There is no I in team

3. Play it by ear

London and South East England

1. Play it by ear

2. There is no I in team

3. Touch base/ moving forward

South West England

1. Believe you and me

2. At the end of the day

3. There is no I in team.

The Midlands

1. There is no I in team

2. Moving forward

3. At the end of the day

North West England

1. There is no I in team

2. Moving forward

3. In terms of

North East England

1. Moving forward

2. Touch base

3. To be honest

What jargon do you find the most annoying at your office? Do they differ from those suggested above? Tell us here.

Job Board Technology

Posted in Online Recruitment

In the fast paced, technologically savvy environment we work in today, what is the best technology that job boards should be running on? A lot of online recruitment sites will still be running on an ASP platform but as websites become more advanced with the need to get ahead of competition offering new exciting features and functionality, platforms for job boards will change.

TipTopJob will be moving to a .NET platform sometime this year so they will be able to offer candidates a much more advanced job search facility and recruiters a user friendly and highly efficient CV search facility.

Earning an honest crust?

Posted in Survey Results

Sales workers are the most dishonest according to a recent survey which has discovered that when given the choice to bend the truth about work expenses, those who work in Sales will jump at the chance, compared to the much more honest accountants and construction workers.

TipTopJob.com surveyed 5 different sectors, reaching across recruitment, IT, accountancy, sales and construction. Individuals were asked a simple yes or no question as to whether they tell the honest truth about their expenses and an astonishing 66% of sales people admitted that they are partial to exaggerating the truth when the time comes to claim their money back.

Accountants are the most unlikely to stretch the truth about their expenses: a massive 71% objected to doing such a thing. Whilst Construction workers followed a similar example with a matching 70% honest answer.

Issues that job boards may have with clients posting jobs into the correct or “incorrect” categories

Posted in Online Recruitment

Because job boards allow their clients to register jobs themselves online, there is potential for mistakes, laziness and lack of accuracy in categorising their job postings.

Agencies with thousands of jobs will register jobs without caring too much about where they will be put in to which results in making the job board look unprofessional in a lot of ways. For example, sometimes you may see a client adding a job that should be in IT into Marketing or they may write in the title and description that the job is in Slough but then register it into Newcastle (who is going to apply for this as jobseekers do not know where the job actually is?). A lot of companies do not even write a comprehensive description and sometimes do not enter anything at all ….

Just some of the challenges that many job boards may experience.

Why do Agencies feel like they are too good to bother spending time making their job registrations accurate? A silly mistake to make because not only do they end up not receiving many applications but they also give themselves a bad name in the eyes of the jobseeker. Just spending a little extra time when posting jobs could mean making a placement or two and it will certainly stop clients moaning to the job boards about the lack of response they have received.

What makes the CV search usable and more importantly efficient?

Posted in Online Recruitment

After plenty of research and feedback from clients it is clear that there is important functionality required by individuals when using a CV search facility. This obviously varies from company to company as well as person to person and at the end of the day it does come down to a subjective judgement and what the individual likes and finds more efficient for their own use when conducting a search.

There is however functionality that makes a search more efficient and provides more accurate results to the user, for example, proximity searching, CV baskets, CV watchdog etc Most job boards offer the same features as one another but as online recruitment becomes more competitive these service offerings will be become more advanced.

We at TipTopJob feel that some of the necessary functionality is currently missing from our CV search which is why we are in the process of upgrading this in the near future. Our gradual upgrade has already begun and in the New Year we will be happy to launch the proximity searching whereby users can search CV’s within a specific distance from a Town or Postcode.

Afer this we will then be working on a final upgrade which will make our Cv database unique with new and exciting features that others will not have. Watch this space…

Blue Mondays… not for Accountants!

Posted in Survey Results

When asking workers what their favourite day of the week is you’d expect a resounding Friday from most people. But not Accountants! In a recent survey, theACCOUNTANCYjob.com asked accountancy jobseekers what their favourite day of the working week was and surprisingly Monday came tops!

31% of Accountants prefer the first day of the week with Friday being the second favourite day with 21%, 17% prefer Wednesdays or Thursdays, meaning the least favourite day of the week is Tuesday with 14%.

Could it be that Accountants love their jobs so much that they just can’t wait until the weekend is over? Or as Corinne Dauncey, from theACCOUNTANCYjob.com asks: “Are these Accountants just being sarcastic?!”

Make your own minds up!

Early birds catch the “candidates”

Posted in Online Recruitment

We’ve been working hard over the past few months building our accountancy job board www.theaccountingjob.com and things have been going well. One thing we know is that finding good accountancy job seekers is not an easy thing to do. Take it from me if your a credit controller or accounts payable you’re in high demand. I was told by someone in the know yesterday that
recruitment consultants are having to get up extra early just to be first on the CV database to get the best CV’s, my heart bleeds. However if you’re in practice or looking to move back into practice your gold dust. So my words of wisdom for all you accountants out there who feel underpaid and over-worked are get that CV written this weekend and stick it on a good job board, I suggest www.theaccountancyjob.com (of course ;-0 ) and get ready for the offers to roll in!

Under the Weather

Posted in Survey Results

It may be a result of such a poor summer that so many people have decided to look for a new job and so many vacancies have appeared. The weather in July was as bad as it gets and from looking at our user figures it drove lots of you to look for a new job. July and August in recruitment has always been down time for both Recruiters and Job seekers but for us July was our best month ever! More recruiters posted jobs on the site than ever before and more of you came to look at those jobs. Here’s what we told the industry.

http://www.onrec.com/newsstories/17868.asp

I can’t just thank the weather, that would not go down well, of course the hard work and dedication of the marketing team and the sales team deserves a mention as well. I may be the only one to say this but, roll on the winter!.

Cpm, Cpc, Cpa - Wtf?

Posted in Online Recruitment

Recruitment advertising has always been seen by people in the “meedja” as product advertising’s ugly sister with a little bit of a “bless them for trying” attitude.

And do you know what? Sometimes I have to agree. After talking to a friend in the “social media” circles about how they could attract recruitment spend, he mentioned buying media based on cost per application (cpa) rather than a cpm or cpc model. This to me seems like a no-brainer, an obvious move towards creating a good ROI model for recruitment and (I’m sure some of the better ad agencies are already crowbaring unwilling and confused clients into buying this way)  however after talking to a couple of supposedly switched on recruiters I began to get the feeling that they were looking at me with the same glazed look my father gives me when I try to explain SKY+ to him.

The problem is simple: people in marketing departments selling products have at least attended a night class at marketing 101, where as the typical person tasked with the last word on the recruitment budget is trained in human resources with no requirement to understand TLA’s*.
