Serious post-holiday blues? How to re-focus after a holiday!

Serious post-holiday blues? How to re-focus after a holiday!

You have just returned from your annual holiday with friends and family whether it be in the Sun, Countryside, Slopes or similar and you cannot seem to switch that flick in your head back to work-mode. You are swimming in emails, you are jet-lagged, you are re-living the days from holiday, you are missing your afternoon nap or you have just experienced that dreaded over-packed train or extra 40 minute traffic jam in the motorway!

Whatever it may be, do not fret, we know the feeling and we are here to help. Here are some top tips on how to get re-focused and back into the flow.

#1. First things are first.
Allow yourself several days or at least a week to catch up on all of your emails and conversations with colleagues and managers. Do not jump into new assignments/projects straight away to over-load yourself! Talk about your holiday and get it all off your chest early on. You may find it easier to arrive early to work in the first week to address your emails, voice messages and just generally to catch up!

#2. Stay revived and refreshed.
Holidays are a great way to relax, unwind, refresh and re-vive yourself. See this as a refreshing new start and allow yourself to bring innovative ideas to the table and begin any new resolutions you may have.

#3. Routine is key.
Get yourself into a strict routine to help yourself settle back into things. Set your alarm to get up at the same time every day, eat lunch at the same time and make sure you leave work on time to start with. It may also help to structure your day so attend to certain tasks/projects/jobs at set points throughout the day and do your best to stick to them. This can help to manage the workload and stop yourself from flitting from job to job.

# 4. Planning.
Start your day off by planning what you will be doing that day and creating a list of tasks to do. Finish off by completing any unfinished tasks and re-setting your desk for the next day. This way you will not get stressed out with too much going on and each day will be a fresh, new on.

# 5. Treat yourself.
Take yourself off for some retail therapy at lunchtime to give yourself that little boost or maybe grab a gourmet coffee on the way into work. Anything to make you feel a little better – decide what it is and do it!

# 6. Plan your next trip.
Most of us need a holiday in order to get our heads down, work hard and to use as a goal. It is a great motivating factor so book in the next holiday and work towards it.

# 7. Start something new.
This could be a good time to start a new hobby, join a gym or exercise class. Keep yourself occupied so you are happy and have enough to do that you do not end up feeling depressed you are not still away on holiday.

# 8. Perspective.
Just remember, everyone feels the same when they return from holiday – you are not alone. You want to quit your job, you cannot concentrate nor motivate yourself – whatever it is! But please do just keep reminding yourself that it is just a temporary feeling and within no time at all you will be back into the swing of things.

Drinks at work

We asked over 2,000 of our users "What is your first drink you have when you get to work?" in order to analyse the caffeine and sugar addicts around us ....

A massive 57% of people have a coffee or a tea when they arrive into the workplace. It is a very common and obvious drink choice when sitting at a desk catching up on emails and could be more common among office workers. That said, grabbing a coffee on route to a meeting in the car or walking on site with a mug of tea would not go unheard of. Drinking coffee and tea can become addictive and therefore a very difficult habit to crack!!

Second to the coffee/tea drinkers we have the purest kind....our "water" drinkers. 33% say this is the first drink they consume when arriving at the workplace and a healthy percentage of them:) How can we promote this further and encourage more to stick to water?

There is current considerable concern about the sugar and caffeine that is being consumed across the World but this survey gives some refreshing evidence to show us that not many respondents drink fizzy caffeine, fizzy non-caffeine drinks, nor squash. Energy drinks did appear in the list however with 5% of our users unfortunately consuming them as their first beverage.

What do you drink when you first arrive at work? Do you feel you need a caffeine or sugar boost? Or are you able to dodge this very dangerous addiction?

Most jobseekers look for a new job as they want more money

In our latest survey question about searching for a new job, we found that most respondents want more money and that is why they are searching for a new role. 27% of jobseekers selected “More Money” in the questionnaire.

Second to that was a “Career Change”. 18% were looking for a new role to change careers and try something new. 16% “Disliked Colleagues/Manager” and that was why they were job searching.

The other options and response rates were:

- Bored/don’t enjoy current role – 14%

- Re-locating – 10%

- Sacked/asked to leave – 8%

- More responsibility – 5%

- Better career prospects – 2%

Why are you looking for a new job? Is there another reason not listed above?

Is money always on the top of your agenda?

Quick tips on how to find a new job through networking

Networking is the number ONE approach to finding a new job whether it is through friends, family, acquaintances, online, conferences, events and the like. Here are some quick tips on how to best network to find yourself a new job…

- Use Linkedin
Linkedin has the largest network of business managers, directors, recruiters etc so you can really connect with the right people in your industry whether they are recruiters in the company you are interested in working for, recruitment agencies or just employees working in the industry/company you want to get into.

- Use Facebook
Your friends on Facebook are invaluable at potentially connecting you with the right people. They may know about relevant jobs being advertised and be able to introduce you to recruiters or those working in an organisation of interest. Do not under-estimate the power of your friends and family.

- Twitter
You can use twitter in the same way as Linkedin and Facebook. Connect with marketers, recruiters, bloggers etc as well. You can follow people in your industry who may be tweeting about relevant information and they may be able to help you in some way or another in your job hunt.

- Offline networking at exhibitions and conferences
If you work in a specific industry, it is worth attending exhibitions or conferences to meet others who may also be able to open doors for you. You can find local events online – it is definitely worth getting down to anything relevant going on.

Expanding your network is so VERY important as you never know who could be able to help you. Do not assume people will not be able to help you. Connect, connect and connect some more  Good Luck!

80% truthful when it comes to their CV/Resume

Our recent survey has found that 80% had never told a white lie on their CV or Resume.

Our interest in such a question was sparked by a recent story about students being threatened with jail for embellishing their CVs. According to CIFAS, the UK fraud prevention service, 324 people were actually prosecuted in 2013 for fraudulent applications.

The survey unfortunately exposes 20% who are still admitting to lying. This may relate to a “white” lie, for example, better A level grades or improved job titles or indeed something else more sinister like creating a whole new job role.

Have you lied? Do you know someone who has lied? What was it about? Let us know….

Hugs in the office lead to...

Our final survey relating to National Hug Your Boss Day is complete and results are out!

We asked our users if they thought that a hug could lead to an office romance. It was almost a 50/50 split in responses with only a fraction (53%) more thinking that YES, it could lead to romance.

Well, of course it could, but does that really mean the romance has come about because of the hug? No probably not. If you have an office fancy, then you have an office fancy. Maybe a HUG just makes you feel like you want to make something out of it.

On another note, if you are having an affair at work, do you avoid hugs in front of co-workers to dodge suspicion? Or are you not bothered about people talking?

Have you been involved in an office fling? Did or do you hug at work? Tell us more....
