Spookiest Jobs

With Halloween around the corner, we thought it was good timing to investigate some of the spookiest jobs and places to work. When we think of spooky, we think eerie, dark, quiet, old, dead, insects, creepy.

Here are some of the spookiest jobs we thought about when we think of the word ‘spooky’…

Housekeeper in an old mansion

Have you ever wondered around a large house in the dark when it is silent, hearing noises that are really only in your imagination? Well, can you imagine if that was what you did every day and it was your job to keep a mansion house, in the middle of nowhere, in the dark! Imagine if that mansion had history dating over 200 years or so old or if it was an ex-prison or even a place where murders or torturing went on. This is well and truly am eerie, creepy, spooky job!

Funeral Director or Mortician or Embalmer

Dealing with the dead at any point gives us the creeps! Having to hold it together to plan and execute a funeral, day after day would mean you would have to have a strong character and ensure you were not emotionally attached. An embalmer takes this category to the next level though and the process of preserving dead bodies so they look suitable for public displays is definitely an unappealing one!

Miner

Miners are very brave having to work in very dark, small, confined spaces for long periods. It can provide a scary experience for most and one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.

Night security at a museum or similar

Again working in the night, looking after a large space where there is no one in sight bring shivers to our spines. Being in charge of security in venues like this to ensure there are no trespassers means having a thick skin!

Forensic Scientist

A Forensic Scientist is tasked with collecting, preserving and analysing scientific evidence which can be traumatic at the best of times, let alone if it was a gruesome crime scene where someone has been killed and there is blood involved. An interesting job but surely one that can keep you awake for hours at night.

Gravedigger

Dealing with the dead again and digging up the area required for a new burial means working alone at times in large, eerie graveyards. Maybe not as spooky as some jobs but enough to make us shudder!

Arachnologist

Sooky means insects and especially spiders so a job as an Arachnologist, who studies spiders and scorpions, harvestmen etc are brave human beings. This is one eerie role.

Taxidermist

Although this job would appeal to some, many would run a mile at the idea of preparing, stuffing and mounting the skins of dead animals. Again we are talking about dealing with the dead and handling them! Yuk!

Have we missed a spooky job that you have experienced or know about? Share with us :)

34% dream about finding a better paid job

Our latest findings on a survey asking what people dream about the most found that 34% dream of finding a new job that is better paid over a new role in a better company, a higher role, relocating to another Town or Country and even working for themselves.

26% dream about moving to a better company whether it is a better brand, larger/smaller number of staff or something similar. The third most popular response was moving to another Country with 17% selecting this option.

The fewest number of responses (1.4%) fell on moving to another Town showing that this option was the least attractive reason for changing a job.

14% dreamt about working for themselves and 7% moving to higher role.

What is your dream?
If you dream of moving to another Country, where is it?
Do you want to live on a beach, for example, in Thailand or a more bustling, lively City in a hot Country like Sydney, Australia? Or would you be happy with a better commission package, a 5% pay rise or a car allowance?

Let us know what your dream is……….

How is a job board different to a recruitment agency?

We get a lot of calls and emails from jobseekers asking us to call them back, wanting to follow up on applications, needing more information about a job etc etc so we wanted to clear up a few key factors that make "us", the job board, different to a recruitment agency....

- First off, a job board is online. It collates jobs in a list which are registered by the recruitment agencies and direct clients. The job board allows a jobseeker to apply to these jobs ONLINE only.

- Job boards do not discuss the details of the job with the jobseeker and do not hold any further information regarding the jobs, other than what is seen on the site. They do not match a jobseeker to a job like a recruitment agency would.

- Job boards allow a jobseeker to register an account online for free and hold multiple CV's and Cover Letter's in their jobseeker accounts so these can be attached to roles when applying to them.

- You tend to see thousands of jobs being advertised on job boards rather than a smaller number held by a recruitment agency.

- Job boards will normally receive a fee from the recruitment agency or direct client for posting their vacancies on the sites.

Hopefully these points help to clear up the main difference between the two. So, if you are looking for a job, remember, you can apply for any job via a job board online. To follow up your application, you can contact the recruitment agency or direct client who are advertising the job, not the job board. Once the application has been made, it is with the advertiser of the job and has nothing more to do with the job board.

If you have any further questions about this, please do not hesitate to ask or comment below or get in touch on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or Linkedin.

Serious post-holiday blues? How to re-focus after a holiday!

Serious post-holiday blues? How to re-focus after a holiday!

You have just returned from your annual holiday with friends and family whether it be in the Sun, Countryside, Slopes or similar and you cannot seem to switch that flick in your head back to work-mode. You are swimming in emails, you are jet-lagged, you are re-living the days from holiday, you are missing your afternoon nap or you have just experienced that dreaded over-packed train or extra 40 minute traffic jam in the motorway!

Whatever it may be, do not fret, we know the feeling and we are here to help. Here are some top tips on how to get re-focused and back into the flow.

#1. First things are first.
Allow yourself several days or at least a week to catch up on all of your emails and conversations with colleagues and managers. Do not jump into new assignments/projects straight away to over-load yourself! Talk about your holiday and get it all off your chest early on. You may find it easier to arrive early to work in the first week to address your emails, voice messages and just generally to catch up!

#2. Stay revived and refreshed.
Holidays are a great way to relax, unwind, refresh and re-vive yourself. See this as a refreshing new start and allow yourself to bring innovative ideas to the table and begin any new resolutions you may have.

#3. Routine is key.
Get yourself into a strict routine to help yourself settle back into things. Set your alarm to get up at the same time every day, eat lunch at the same time and make sure you leave work on time to start with. It may also help to structure your day so attend to certain tasks/projects/jobs at set points throughout the day and do your best to stick to them. This can help to manage the workload and stop yourself from flitting from job to job.

# 4. Planning.
Start your day off by planning what you will be doing that day and creating a list of tasks to do. Finish off by completing any unfinished tasks and re-setting your desk for the next day. This way you will not get stressed out with too much going on and each day will be a fresh, new on.

# 5. Treat yourself.
Take yourself off for some retail therapy at lunchtime to give yourself that little boost or maybe grab a gourmet coffee on the way into work. Anything to make you feel a little better – decide what it is and do it!

# 6. Plan your next trip.
Most of us need a holiday in order to get our heads down, work hard and to use as a goal. It is a great motivating factor so book in the next holiday and work towards it.

# 7. Start something new.
This could be a good time to start a new hobby, join a gym or exercise class. Keep yourself occupied so you are happy and have enough to do that you do not end up feeling depressed you are not still away on holiday.

# 8. Perspective.
Just remember, everyone feels the same when they return from holiday – you are not alone. You want to quit your job, you cannot concentrate nor motivate yourself – whatever it is! But please do just keep reminding yourself that it is just a temporary feeling and within no time at all you will be back into the swing of things.

Work from home?

Working from home has become a big thing for many people with more sophisticated technology available and to accommodate those striving to have a better work/life balance. It does however usually depend on what kind of role you do as to whether it is even an option.

We asked our users recently how often some of them did work from home. We were surprised at the responses as we did expect a larger number of responses to the one-off times and once per week options. Only 9% work from home at one-off times, 6% once per week, 5% twice per week and 12% 2 to 4 times per week.

27% actually work from home everyday BUT a much larger proportion.....40%, said they NEVER work from home.

What job do you do if you work from home? Help us understand what types of roles actually consist of more working from home :)

Introducing theExMILITARYjob.com in partnership with Mission Motorsport

Introducing theExMILITARYjob.com in partnership with Mission Motorsport

It is today becoming more obvious that military personnel who are leaving the forces and returning back to the UK struggle to find a new career and settle back into civilian life. We are conscious of the difficulties that the ex-military face and as a job board we want to help make a difference and get involved in helping our heroes back to work.

With recent news of over 8000 troops being de-mobbed / sent home from Camp Bastian, Helmand Province, Afghanistan and knowing our own government have made little or NO provision for our Heroes who have daily laid down their lives so we may live ours in relative safety, it is NO longer enough to put £1 in the poppy sellers tin and think we have done our bit. No, WE HAVE NOT…..we have a duty of care to HELP OUR HEROES back to work that bit quicker. And that is what we are taking control of!

This is why we have recently launched a specialist jobsite called theExMILITARYjob.com so it is easy to find jobs across the UK that are specifically being advertised for ex-military personnel. We are working in partnership with Mission Motorsport (soon to be a defence partner), supported by Help for Heroes, the Recovery Career Service and the MOD, which aids in the recovery and rehabilitation of those affected by military operations by providing opportunities through Motorsport.

On top of launching and managing the theExMILITARYjob.com we are also getting involved in additional activities to help the process of finding a new job. Currently we are advising individuals on how to better their CV’s in terms of structure, format and content so they are better placed to find work.

theExMILITARYjob.com and Mission Motorsport is supported by Help for Heros and the Recovery Careers Service. Together we will make a difference!

Our motto…. “To help our “Heros” back to work….that bit quicker”
