Are you delaying the dreaded job hunt? Find out WHY many do...

Are you one of those people who wants to change jobs or careers…but never does? Do not worry, you are not alone in feeling this way and because it is so common we wanted to find out why it is that people remain in a job and delay the process of the dreaded job search.

Our latest survey asked why people would put off applying for a new job.

We found that 51% of people had just not found the right opportunity for them. 26% did not want to leave the friends they had made at the workplace behind which is a comforting factor showing that the workplace is a fantastic opportunity to make new and good friends that you want long-last relationships with.

15% of people are put off with the time and effort that has to go into the change and so just leave it and leave it. Finally, 7% are actually scared of change.

Whatever the reason for putting off the job search, it is a hugely common issue and a daunting one for many. It can often feel overwhelming with all the information, especially the number of agencies, job boards, aggregators, organisations to visit that help you that it becomes more off-putting than actually helpful.

Well, if you are not happy in your current role and want a change, then we can help. Get over to www.tiptopjob.com where you can search for any kind of job you are looking for and apply to suitable vacancies online. As a job board, the process needs to all be done online and the client advertising the role will come back to you to let you know if you have been successful. Do not delay this job hunt anymore - no need to be scared or daunted - there is no time like the present!

We wish you all the luck in the world and hope we have something suitable for you at some point :)

Majority take it upon themselves to make CV Tip Top

Our latest press release has been issued today which is titled, "Majority take it upon themselves to make CV Tip Top". Here is the full press release......

Two thirds of people rely on themselves to update their CV, a recent study has found. This may involve an individual updating it on their own accord or using the Internet to research the necessary steps.

The study asked over 1,000 jobseekers what kind of help they have received in their most recent update of their CV.

A third of the respondents had paid to use a professional service. With many organisations around today who will charge a small amount to review and update a CV, it is quick, easy and affordable to use this option. Some even offer a free CV review which can used as a guide to improve what is already there. Only 9% turn to friends and family to seek similar help.

Corinne Hutchinson from TipTopJob, states, “Whether you are seeking help from someone else or not, it is important to take time to update your CV regularly and do it well. Updating your CV shows recruiters what your latest skills and experiences are and shows you are keen to find new employment….right now! The main advice here is to not leave your CV for too long without updating it. This also applies to Linkedin profiles. In fact, it is even more important to keep these details updated given they are so publicly available.”

How to overcome the 'blues' on Blue Monday, the most depressing day of the year

The third Monday of January is known as "Blue Monday" and is approaching on the 18th January 2016. It is not just a whim but a calculated theory that was introduced back in 2005.

Maybe it is to do with the reality of being back at work after a lovely rested Christmas break and no doubt something to do with the fact that we are heading towards the end of a long month and people are desperate for their pay after spending a lot of money on gifts. Limited funds can cause anyone worry, upset and stress. On top of this, cold, grey and rainy weather can cause quite a large proportion of people to suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or a lesser form and make people feel depressed just getting up in the morning.

So, given that "Blue Monday" is a real issue and that it is apparently going to effect a large percentage of organisation's productivity, we thought we would give you a few tips on how to overcome the feeling of being "Blue".

- Listen to music to make you feel happy;
- Organise a holiday or a break from the office so you have something to look forward to;
- See friends;
- Organise your work diary so you mentally are on top of your daily tasks and leave Friday with a plan of action for Monday;
- Eat well and drink less alcohol so you do not have the ups and downs;
- Exercise, whether it is walking or cycling to work, playing a team sport or hitting the gym;
- Take photos of your friends and family into work to make you smile;
- Have early nights and relax before going to sleep;
- Make plans in the evening so you are not just sitting in front of the TV every night;
- Suggest a motivating team/department evening or day out;
- If there is something specific making you feel down, speak to your boss and address it;
- Think about all the things you are excited about and that make you happy and put these into a list that you can refer to.

We hope some of these ideas will help you to get through "Blue Monday". If you have any other good ideas to help other people from suffering, do share with us here......

Recruitment Tests for nursing/midwifery careers

If you’re reading this then you’re probably applying for (or at least thinking about it) to a nursing or midwifery related course. Courses are available at over 70 universities, but many of them will ask you to sit a literacy and numeracy test before accepting your application. In this guide we’ll go over some of the universities and their tests in detail, to give you an idea of what you’ll need to know and how to prepare.

From the get go, to get a place on a nursing course you’ll need to have C grades at GCSE in English and Maths, but many universities are now asking applicants to take nursing-specific English and Maths tests to make sure that they have the necessary skills. The tests are usually administered at a selection day or similar event.

Just for TipTopJob readers, we’ve outlined some of the different tests used by different universities, and the keys to success. Read through the information, and make sure you practice for the tests by using JobTestPrep’s specially created nursing numeracy and literacy test pack.

Applicants to Coventry, Leeds, King’s College London, UWE, Salford, Anglia Ruskin, London South Bank, Greenwich, Middlesex will need to pass the aptitude tests before being accepted onto a course.

Applicants to nursing at Coventry University will be invited to a selection event which includes nursing numeracy and literacy tests. The numeracy test here is a mental arithmetic test and focuses on the four basic mathematical functions. Questions might be straight-up Maths, or they might take the form of a word problem based on a nursing scenario. The English test will ask you to write a short piece on why you want to become a nurse. The keys to success here are: spelling and grammar; being able to present your points in a concise manner; and a clear writing style.

Applicants to Leeds won’t be tested on literacy, but will need to pass a numerical exam (also at a selection event). You’ll be tested on addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, fractions and percentages. You’ll also be asked to perform basic drug calculations, and some questions might require you to convert weights and volumes between the imperial and metric systems. No calculators allowed, but you can use a pen and paper to work out your answers.

King’s College also invite their nursing applicants to a selection event in order to complete literacy and numeracy tests, and an interview. To get to the interview stage, you’ll first need to pass the tests. For the literacy test, you’ll have 20 minutes to answer questions on a nursing-related text. The test examines how well you can read, understand and apply information in a piece of text in a nursing context. The timing is pretty tight, so you’ll have to work quickly but carefully.

The numeracy test is also timed, and tests similar skills to those tested in the other universities’ maths tests. The crucial difference here is that the test is timed – you’ll have to get through 15 questions in 20 minutes.

UWE, Middlesex, Greenwich, Salford and Anglia Ruskin and many other universities also put their applicants through similar tests to the ones we’ve outlined above. While the timing and format of the tests may differ slightly, the content is fairly standard. Some universities (such as London South Bank) also ask you to take a situational judgement test, which is designed to examine whether you have the right personality, attitude and abilities for a career in nursing. The test is in a multiple choice format and is based on scenarios that might happen in the day-to-day life of a nurse.

We’ve included some examples of questions from the nursing tests. If you find these questions daunting and you need to brush up on some of the skills you might not have used since school, then try the practice tests at JobTestPrep. They have a whole range of nursing numeracy and literacy test packs, designed to help guide you through the process.

Dealing with stress at work

A survey questioning 1000 jobseekers about how they deal with stress at work found that almost a third of people take a walk to instantly reduce stress at work. 27% of people revealed that going for a walk was how they dealt with stressful situations in the workplace.

Second to this, a quarter of the respondents “treated” themselves. This took the form of treating themselves with some food they do not normally eat or visiting the shop to buy themselves something to cheer them up! Who can deny retail therapy to lift the mood?

Surprisingly no-one reported reading as a de-stresser, only 10% went out to see their friends and luckily, only 3% sunk their heads in alcohol after work. 19% decided to take some time off from work to combat stress and 17% exercised.

Just as stress can affect people in different ways, handling and dealing with stress also varies from one person to another. What works for one person, may not for a colleague. It is about finding what makes you feel good and what reduces your stress and dealing with it in your own way.

Corinne Hutchinson, comments, “Stress is rife in today’s busy, complex lives. People have to work out their limits and find situations that make them feel less stressed. If not, the knock on effect on individuals can be severe and second to that can impact on performance at work which nobody wants. We have some articles in our Career Centre about dealing with stress to help people to get through difficult times.”
